Coming February 18th and 19th, 2012, Momentum Dance Lab will present the annual Art Moves performance at the Knoxville Museum of Art. A longstanding collaboration between local composers and choreographers, these artists draw inspiration from the works exhibited at the museum to create a full sensory experience of the arts.

This year Momentum Dance Lab will present new works from both new company members and founding members. Roderick Beverly, a founding member, is setting a structured improvisation on 8 dancers based on his interpretations of 2002x, by Whitney Leland with music composed by James R. Carlson.

Leah Pinder, another founding member, is creating choreography for a quartet based on the painting Park by Chuck Forsman.
Jackie Sobel, co-director for ArtMoves, choreographer, and performer, is choreographing a duet about the dynamics conflict can bring to romantic relationships titled, The Way We Are. With lots of lifting and weight sharing, this piece is sure to be exciting! Jackie is collaborating with composer James R. Carlson, a long standing participant in ArtMoves, who will perform his piece on the accordian.

Inspired by the painting, Untitled, by Josip Tiric, Amelia Breed, co-director for ArtMoves, is choreographing a four part piece about the experiences of two artists, one living in a democratic society and one coming from a fallen Communist society. Collaborating with music director, Rachel Schlafer-Parton, several styles, instruments, and cultures will be compiled to present a montage of layered story.

Gabriella Dorado is choreographing a trio, titled, My Place Admist the Chaos about maintaining the balance between obligations and appreciation. The languid, heavy feeling of blues music composed for this piece by Guille Dorado contrasts the urban abstract painting, View of the City, which is a significant source of inspiration for the choreography.

This year, Momentum Dance Lab will be working with a new music director, Rachel Schlafer-Parton. She is well acquainted with Momentum, having performed with them both as a musician and as a dancer. Rachel's eclectic performing experience, vocal, instrumental, and movement, ranges from early music to jazz ensemble, classical trio to theater, and mime to modern dance. Her instrumental music has often been used for purposes of healing and meditation.

Momentum dance Lab will be showcasing new choreography from their associate artists and company members as well as guest choreographer Gwendolyn Johnson Delaney, director of Tennessee Conservatory of Fine Arts. Works making their debut include a trio choreographed by associate artist, Amelia Breed. She describes her piece as being “A look at machines and resources used everyday, in the home and within our landscape. A story unfolds through the eyes of someone remembering humanity and a quest for greater expectation.” Lisa Holden, an associate artist and long-time dancer in East Tennessee, will also debut her choreography through a solo she will perform and also a duet. Jackie Sobel, MDL company member, will showcase her choreography in a high energy group piece set to the music of Nine Inch Nails. In addition, she collaborated with Don Dillard to choreograph a piece called, The Philosophy of Dance, in which Dillard will be speaking as Sobel performs movement based on his ideas. “The Philosophy of Dance begins with the intuition that the expressive movements of a dancer possesses’ its own language. Yet in exploring this intuition, we encounter a riddle which emerges out of trying to describe the expression of movement: If only things can be moved, then how can "expression" be moved by things, and be capable of moving things, when it isn’t a thing? Through a combination of philosophy and dance, The Philosophy of Dance guides the audience towards answering this riddle for themselves,” writes Dillard.

Along with the pieces making their debut, the company will revisit works choreographed by founding members, Leah Pinder and Cara Bradshaw. Leah Pinder, a recipient of an Individual Artist Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission, will be restaging IV from Momentum’s 2009 fall show, “Ghosts at the Window”. With music by Steve Reich,IV, is an exciting and fast pasted piece with complex choreography complimenting the music. “Divergent Connections” will also include several other pieces ranging from solos, duets, and group pieces creating an exciting performance filled with various styles of choreography displaying professional modern dance..

Chance and Circumstance will feature a total of 12 performances choreographed and produced by Knoxvilles own Momemtum Dance Lab.  Our strive this Fall was to incorporate a vast array of styles from our modern based collaboration.  One piece, chreographed by Sarah Dickinson, will display the power of male dancers; "I feel as though the base player in Frank Zappas' is on an eogtistical power trip and wanted to display that in my choreography.  The piece will also celbrate the atheleticism of male dancers.  Leah Pinder uses suggestive tones and melody in Phillip Glass' The Canyon to describe her personna of intimidation, determination, and acceptance in her movement while Shannon Efteland describes her piece as a contemporary ballet that plays with mixing layers of music in Bach's prelude to Cello #1.  Jackie sobel wanted her chroeography to examplify the realization that there is more to life than the grulling everday tasks we all must perform, but sometimes it is just unattainable.  With all the ideas developed by MDL, this show is sure to please the Knoxville community! Don't miss Chance and Circumstance!
